FBI agents seized New York mayor's electronic devices

REUTERS/Karen Toro/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Nov 10 (Reuters) - FBI agents seized electronic devices from New York City Mayor Eric Adams earlier this week, days after a raid on the home of his chief campaign fundraiser, according to an attorney for the mayor's campaign. Boyd Johnson, an attorney for Adams' campaign, confirmed on Friday that Adams had provided the FBI with electronic devices after agents approached the mayor following an event on Monday night. Johnson said the FBI requested the devices after Adams informed investigators of impropriety by an unidentified individual. The devices seized from the mayor - at least two cellphones and an iPad - were returned within a matter of days, the Times said. Adams' 2025 election campaign has paid Suggs's consulting firm, Suggs Solutions, about $98,000 so far, public records show.

His city council victory came 20 years after he and the other four men, known as the "Central Park Five," sued New York City for wrongful conviction and violation of their civil rights, eventually winning a $41 settlement in 2014. Salaam invoked his nightmarish ordeal in his bid for city council. A few hours north, the Amarillo City Council on Tuesday will weigh its own such law, which could lead to a future council or city-wide vote. He took that approach in Odessa's city elections in 2022 after the council initially blocked one of his "sanctuary city for the unborn" proposals. Not all backers of abortion restrictions support Dickson's transport bans, however. The debates over the transport bans are spurring new shows of support for abortion access. Abortion rights supporters, including four abortion funds in Texas, said they expected the transport bans to backfire on the anti-abortion movement by galvanizing political participation from abortion rights advocates in the lead-up to next year's presidential election.

The number of annual reported murders never topped 18,000 during the 2010s, but jumped to 21,570 in 2020. Attacks on law enforcement officers increased slightly, up 1.8% from 2021 to an estimated 102,100 in 2022, the report said.

(Reuters) - Washington's National Zoo is honoring its three giant pandas with nine days of events ahead of their return to China but stormy weather and a looming U.S. government shutdown have put something of a damper on the festivities. Mei Xiang, Tian Tian and their cub Xiao Qi Ji are scheduled to be returned in early December. The zoo, operated by the Smithsonian Institute, receives federal funding, and would be forced to close to the public during a government shutdown, according to its website. Mei Xiang, 25, and Tian Tian, 26, came to the zoo in 2000 under a cooperative research and breeding agreement with the China Wildlife Conservation Association. The zoo did not say whether it has any immediate plans to acquire more giant pandas, but said on its website that it "hopes to continue this work in the future."

Emergency sirens on Maui, part of Hawaii's decades-old early warning system, never sounded. But authorities are finding existing emergency alert systems insufficient for these new threats - sometimes with deadly results. NEW CHALLENGESAcross much of the world, warning systems for natural disasters have not evolved in response to climate change, according to Schlegelmilch. While each locality faces a distinctive threat landscape and needs a unique warning system, disaster management experts see some solutions that can be applied everywhere. The county also acquired a warning system that can send alerts to cellphones, fixed phone lines, emails - and even fax machines.
